Mrs. Tigest Wako - Ethiopia - Light
Woah. Stop. Don’t keep reading. Go add a bag of this to your cart. I’ll wait.
Good? Done? Great.
This coffee is ridiculously aromatic. The hot cup practically throws sweet cherry at you — rich, deep, round, and incredibly inviting. As it cools, things get a little more perfumy, with lavender jockeying its way to the forefront, adding a whole new layer of fun. On the palate, that sweet cherry sticks around, balanced by honey and a subtle hint of coriander.
"Dang. It’s good." –probably future-you.
But before you hustle off to checkout, there’s someone else you should know about: Mrs. Tigest Wako, the farmer behind this coffee.
Mrs. Wako was born and raised in Idedo, in Ethiopia’s Gedeo Zone, an area known for producing many of the coffees that made Yirgacheffe famous. She inherited her family’s 7.6-hectare farm from her parents, where older Kurume and Dega varieties have gradually been replaced with newer varieties like 74110 and 74112.
Her farm is unusually large for the area. The Gedeo Zone is one of the most densely populated parts of Africa, and farms average around a hectare. At 7.6 hectares, Mrs. Wako is one of the few farmers in the area working land on this scale.
She’s also one of the few female landowners in her community. Among the Gedeo, land inheritance has traditionally favored male children, making her ownership of the family farm all the more significant.
So yeah, the coffee is really good. But there’s a lot more behind the cup than cherries, lavender, and honey. There’s a farm, a family, and a woman doing some pretty remarkable work to get it here.
